ESTCP DEMONSTRATION: SOUTHWESTERN PROVING GROUND, ARKANSAS

ANJV employees were among the first users of classification technologies.  In support of a technology performance benchmark program, ANJV employees participated in an ESTCP-sponsored classification demonstration study at the Former Southwestern Proving Ground, Arkansas.  The three-acre study area contained multiple munitions types ranging in size from 20mm to 155mm projectiles.  Dynamic and cued classification data were collected using NRL’s TEMTADS 2x2x3 prototype sensor.  Because it was a technology demonstration, source objects were recovered from all anomalies.

Results of the effort were excellent.  All the UXO were correctly classified while correctly rejecting more than 85% of the non-hazardous clutter.  In addition to demonstrating competence in classification methods and data quality monitoring, this early effort demonstrated our ability to manage projects on time and within budget.
